Good business opportunities in Upper Middle Income Countries

Expoalimentaria, a foodstuff fair, and Cusco, Andean Fashion Week – Fair Trade Fashion event were organised in Peru in October 2013. Both events were attended by a great amount of local companies and they received a lot of international attention. Expoalimentaria, which was organised in Lima, is one of the major fairs in Latin America, and also this year it was attended by thousands of participants. Cusco, Andean Fashion Week offered hundreds of small and large fair trade fashion manufacturers an opportunity to showcase and sell their products. Finnpartnership attended both events.

The Peruvian textile products and foodstuff fulfill the requirements of European consumers, and there are many certified businesses and products among them. Among others, functional foods of high quality, luxurious knitwear and interior decoration products made of alpaca and vicuña fiber are produced in Peru. The main organizer of the events, the export promotion agency PromPeru, offers sponsored tickets to buyers. This year four Finnish companies received a ticket, two for each event. The Embassy of Peru in Finland, Muotikaupan liitto (Fashion Commerce in Finland) as well as Finnpartnership helped to promote the contacts both ways.  

All four companies had positive experiences of the events and managed to conduct business. Many companies see the potential in doing business with upper middle income countries only when “on the spot”. As an example, fair trade fashion was sold in Cusco worth of 11 million dollars according to the organizer.

Finnpartnership promoted Finland and Finnish possibilities in the presentations and seminars of the events. In Expoalimentaria Finnpartnership promoted its Matchmaking service as well as Finnish know-how in food safety.  More than 50 Finnish companies were contacted to provide material. Hopefully the interest shown by hundreds of participants will lead to contacts with those Finnish companies who had offered their material for use. A presentation on the market of Finnish functional foods was given by Ville Salomäki from Ekovista Oy.

Finnpartnership arranged its own Matchmaking Seminar at the Cusco Fashion Week, where World Vision ambassador Paola Suhonen told about fashion, commercialization of products and branding. 

We expect many Peruvian companies to register to Finnpartnership’s Matchmaking service in the near future. Finnpartnership’s online Partner Search database enables businesses to find partners in developing markets.
